Double Stars - Coma Berenices
-
Note:
All images are at 1:1 scale taken with the same equipment (120mm refractor, 1000mm FL, Canon 450D DSLR) and same magnification unless stated. The Canon 450D gives equivilent to a 12mm EP, giving a mangnification factor of approximatly 80x. This means that the split between all stars can be compared against each other. Exposure times and ISO levels are adjusted to give best image of both components but on average they are 4 seconds at ISO 400

The first of my doubles in Coma Berenices, the primary magnitued of 5 against the secondary of 6.5 make it fairly easy to image and split. A simple on to start with. Details: Constellation: Coma Berenices RA: 12h 35' 07.8" Dec: +18° 22' 37.4" PA: 271º Separation: 20.3"

The second of my doubles in Coma Berenices, the primary magnitued of 5 against the secondary of 8. There is however a 3rd component to this group at magnitued of 11 and listed at 35" separation. Not sure if it is the one that is visible in the image to the left of the primary but it would be about the correct separation. Next, a very widely spaced double with magnitudes of 5.5 and 6.5, very easy to split.
Details: Constellation: Coma Berenices RA: 12h 28m 54.7s Dec: +25° 54' 46.3" PA: 251º Separation: 145"

Another very wide double, similar magnitudes of 6 and 6.5. The image scale is different in this image in order to fit it in the frame. If cropped to the same scale as all the others, it would cut one of the stars off. The others are scaled at 200x200 pixels, this one is at 300x300 pixels.

I don't think this image shows the primary (magnitued 5) and secondry (magnitued 7) as the secondary is listed as 1" separation, however there is a third component listed at magnitude 9 with a separation of 29", and therefore I assume this is what I have captured in this image. Details: Constellation: Coma Berenices RA: 22h 58m 38.8s Dec: +48° 16' 0.6" PA: 126º Separation: 28.7"

Magnitudes of 7.0 and 8.6 with a 26.8 make this double an easy one to split and image and add to my collection. Details: Constellation: Coma Berenices RA: 12h 14m 06.5s Dec: +32° 47' 03.0" PA: 88° Separation: 26.8"

A nice close double with equal magnitudes of 7. My limit of separation is around 7" and this split at 8.9" is just in there but clearly split. Details: Constellation: Coma Berenices RA: 12h 20m 41.4s Dec: +27° 03' 15.0" PA: 245° Separation: 8.9"

Magnitudes of 6.5 and 7.5 with a 34" separation, made this one nice and easy, there also appears a small amount of colour difference, but hard to tell with my Acro. Details: Constellation: Coma Berenices RA: 12h 45m 26.2s Dec: +14° 22' 24.9" PA: 181° Separation: 34.1"

Another very similar magnitued of 7 and 7.5 and 16" separation made this an ideal one to image. Details: Constellation: Coma Berenices RA: 12h 51m 54.8s Dec: +19° 10' 19.9" PA: 202° Separation: 16.0"

This on at 6.2" separation should have been just beyond my limit, but conditions must have favoured me. A magnitude 7 primary with 10 secondry almost swamped. Interestingly, there does appear to be a noticable colour difference between this pair. Details: Constellation: Coma Berenices RA: 13h 16m 51.0s Dec: +17° 01' 01.9" PA: 108° Separation: 6.2"

And finaly for this session a fainter pair of magnitudes of 8.5 and 9.0 with a 14.5" separation, nice and easy but appeared to be strangely dim, of course when I looked outside, I found visibility was fading and clouds starting to roll in. Details: Constellation: Coma Berenices RA: 13h 33m 19.0s Dec: +23° 00' 36.7" PA: 177° Separation: 14.5"
