Double Stars - Draco

  • Note:

All images are at 1:1 scale taken with the same equipment (120mm refractor, 1000mm FL, Canon 450D DSLR) and same magnification unless stated. The Canon 450D gives equivilent to a 12mm EP, giving a mangnification factor of approximatly 80x. This means that the split between all stars can be compared against each other. Exposure times and ISO levels are adjusted to give best image of both components but on average they are 10 seconds at ISO 400

    HIP 57639 & 57640B

A nice easy double to start with, magnitudes of 7.5 and 8.3, easy to split with a separation of 11" arc. Slight colour difference noticable with an amber yellow primary and silver blue secondary.

  • 23:40 BST      27-04-2013

    HIP 71782A & 71782B

A close pair at 7.9" arc, magnitudes of 7.3 & 8.3 make this a fairly even pair, with both appearing yellow in colour
    Details: Constellation: Draco    RA: 14h 41' 1.0"    Dec: +57° 57' 25.6"    PA: 48º     Separation: 7.9"

    HIP 72029A & 72028B

This pair has magnitudes of 6.9 and 9.2 making the primary look much larger than the secondary. With 11" arc of separation, this makes for a good split.
    Details: Constellation: Draco    RA: 14h 44m 3.6s    Dec: +61° 05' 53.3"    PA: 000º     Separation: 11.5"

    HIP 77652A & 77652B

A very close pair, with a separation of just 6.3" arc and magnitudes of 6.9 and 8.9, make this on the resoloution limit of my equipment.
    Details: Constellation: Draco    RA: 15h 51m 10.1s    Dec: +52° 54' 25.1"    PA: 279º     Separation: 6.3"

  • 23:31 BST      27-04-2013

    HIP 79125

A high contrast pair with magnitudes of 6.3 and 12.1 make this difficult to image but at 12" arc separation, easy to split. The secondary just visible in the glare of the primary.
    Details: Constellation: Draco    RA: 16h 09m 2.8s    Dec: +57° 56' 16.6"    PA: 140°     Separation: 12.3"

  • 23:26 BST      27-04-2013

    HIP 82291 & 82288

An easy one this time with a wide separation of 47" arc, and fairly even magnitudes of 7.8 & 8.9 make this a nice contrasting pair.
    Details: Constellation: Draco    RA: 16h 48m 52.5s    Dec: +59° 30' 12.2"    PA: 348°     Separation: 47.4"

  • 23:22 BST      27-04-2013

    HIP 86614A & 86620B (Psi Dra)

A nice bright pair, magnitudes 4.6 & 5.6 and a separation of 30" arc, make this an easy target.
    Details: Constellation: Draco    RA: 17h 41m 56.5s    Dec: +72° 08' 52.3"    PA: 015°     Separation: 30.0"

  • 23:19 BST      27-04-2013

    HIP 88071A & 88062B

Even mangnitudes of 7.6 & 7.7 make this an easy target to image. Separation of 21" arc, create a pair of cats eyes.
    Details: Constellation: Draco    RA: 17h 59m 13.8s    Dec: +64° 08' 33.5"    PA: 283°     Separation: 21.3"

  • 23:13 BST      27-04-2013

    HIP 88136A & 88127B (41/40 Dra)

Another pair of cats eyse similar to the last, with magnitudes of 5.7 & 6.0 and slightly closer separation of 18.6" arc.primary by 108 arcseconds in the sky is the binary star Mu2 Boötis, The magnitude 4.5 primary and 6.5 secondary show as a bright pair. The secondary appears slightly elongated due to a third component separated by 2.2 arcseconds.
    Details: Constellation: Draco    RA: 18h 00m 9.5s    Dec: +80° 00' 16.4"    PA: 232°     Separation: 18.6"

  • 23:08 BST      27-04-2013

    HIP 88379A & 88385B

A slightly confusing pair, listed with a separation of 22.8" arc, but suspect this is an error as the companion star is approximatly 6" arc, and just visible in the image. The star at 22" arc is un-named but has a simialar magnitude of 9.5 to the seconday. The primary shows a magnitude of 6.9
    Details: Constellation: Draco    RA: 18h 02m 50.9s    Dec: +75° 47' 25.3"    PA: 235° (3rd, 279°)     Separation: 6.0" (3rd, 22.8")

    HIP 88381, 88385B & 88385C

A triple system, magnitudes of 7.8, 8.1 & 8.5, with a wide separation between A & B components and close separation between B & C components. Due to the close magnitudes, components B & C are clearly split.
    Details: Constellation: Draco    RA: 18h 02m 52.8s    Dec: +56° 25' 41.2"    A-B PA: 028°     Separation: 35.9 B-C PA: 146°     Separation: 6.0"

    HIP 91013A

A bright primary at magnitude 5.5 and not so bright secondary at 8.7, make this a high contrast pair. The 25" arc separation makes it easy enough to image though.
